Complete engines

ABSAF make several kinds of BSA Gold Star engines: standard, 600 cc and racing engines.

The standard engine

The standard 500cc ABSAF engine is almost exactly the same as the original BSA Gold Star DBD 34 engine, except for the relocated 10mm spark plug (for better combustion), modified inlet and exhaust ports (for better flow), forged piston, stainless steel valves, nikasil lined one-piece barrel, modern built up crankshaft with big end needle bearing, heavy duty main bearings, cast iron high capacity oil pump, vernier adjustable cam pinions and the timing gear plate is located by a dowel.  All individual parts are fully interchangeable with those in original engines.  The estimated output is 46 bhp, max rpm is 7200.  Bore x stroke is 85 x 88mm, compression is 10:1.  On the outside it is only distinguishable from an original engine by the centrally positioned spark plug and 2mm longer oil pump cover.  This engine is so reliable that it we cannot recommend it to those of you who like to spend their weekends taking the engine to bits.  In fact, this engine may never need to be opened up again.

The 600cc engine

The 600cc engine has a 90mm bore x 92.5mm stroke.  This is not merely an engine with a bigger bore barrel, it has a reinforced cylinder barrel made especially for this model, with a modern flat piston design, modern cylinder head layout, and this engine includes all the improvements on the standard engine.  Max. rpm around 6700.  Compression is 10:1, so this engine is not only very fast but also very reliable.  Used mainly in moto-cross and for street bikes that want the extra speed of a 600cc engine, with the outward characteristics of the 500cc Gold Star.  It is not suitable for 500cc Classics racing.

Full race engine

This lightweight full race engine has extraordinary racing cams, developed especially for road racing and it also contains all of ABSAF's racing products.  On the inside there are altered cam followers and pushrods, a unique lightweight crank, extreme heavy duty crankshaft bearings, optimum flow and combustion cylinder head and the valve angles are also altered to improve performance.  The valves themselves are designed to win championships.  Bore x stroke is 85 x 88mm, max rpm is 7400, with a compression ratio of 12.6:1. This is a very fast, high torque, low inertia engine, the engine used by all the National Classics Champions who ride ABSAF.

It is impossible to give an exact bhp as readings will vary depending on the carburettor, ignition and exhaust systems.

Type of engine Price in Euros
Standard engine € 6450
600cc engine € 6880
